The Associated Press celebrates its 175th anniversary this month, marking nearly two centuries of advancing the power of factual journalism.
Founded in May 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business.
“For 175 years, the world has relied on The Associated Press to report the facts,” said AP President and CEO Gary Pruitt. “From delivering the news via pony express to publishing our gold-standard U.S. election returns on the blockchain, AP continues to tell the world’s story in innovative ways nearly two centuries later. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to serving our customers better than ever for the next 175 years.”
The AP was formed when five New York City newspapers funded a pony express route through Alabama to bring news of the Mexican War north faster than the U.S. Post Office could deliver it.
To commemorate its 175th anniversary, AP will auction off a collection of 10 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) based on the news agency’s iconic photojournalism, making some of history’s most notable photographs available on the blockchain for the first time.
Earlier this year the AP Corporate Archives launched a visual history of the news cooperative in an eight-part blog series.
