Ricardo Mazalán, Latin America deputy news director and long-time photographer, had been covering the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. The final stretch was Barbados to cover the final between India and South Africa on June 29. Hurricane Beryl was heading to the Southern Caribbean, including Barbados. Mazalán was planning to fly out July 1, but the authorities decided to close the airport. Beryl became a strong Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall on nearby Grenada. Mazalán went to the scene and shot some of the most used AP photos of the storm, a good example of how to be at the right place at the right time.
