Audience Engagement Editor Sallee Ann Harrison noticed a trend in her Instagram feed: People were sharing information about Meta’s new political content policy to tamp down the number of political posts that users see on their feeds and were explaining to others how they could opt out of the policy.
Harrison also noticed that there had been very little news coverage of this trend.
With Digital weekend supervisor Sophia Tulp, Harrison pitched the story to business news editor Shawn Chen, who suggested turning it into a spot version of a new AP fixture, “One Tech Tip.” It was an opportunity to serve AP’s audience, create informative content and to use helpful tech information to connect better with readers.
Chen’s team worked with the Digital department to produce a story quickly and it was adapted for sharing on Instagram. It so far has accrued more than 14,500 likes, 6,500 shares and 3,000 saves — well above what a typical post garners.
